The manager of Al-Ittihad, Steven Gerrard, is on the verge of being dismissed from the club, as reported by the French Press agency on Wednesday.
The source noted that "the club's management was addressed to the sustainability committee, which is responsible for contracts with Saudi clubs, with a request to terminate relations with Gerrard." The decision to terminate the contract with Gerrard may be made today (Wednesday) or tomorrow (Thursday) before the match with Al-Shabab in the tournament's semifinals.
It is suggested that on the site of the former captain of "Liverpool" will be appointed Saad al-Shahrani to manage the team. The sustainability committee is in contact with Gerrard and has agreed with him to terminate the cooperation under the mutual agreement.
The decision was made due to the results of the team, which occupies the twelfth place in the tournament table, with five wins, four draws, and eight defeats in the semifinals, having collected a total of 19 points, remaining five points behind the sixteenth zone, which is in the danger zone for relegation.
The team suffered a loss to the Saudi Arabian national team after losing 1-3 in the Round of 16 against Al-Jabala. At the same time, Al-Ittihad leads its group in the champions of the Gulf clubs with 12 points from four wins.
Since his appointment in 2023, Gerrard (44 years old) has led his team in 55 matches of various tournaments, with victory in 19 matches, 16 draws, and 20 defeats. Gerrard, a holder of the Champions League with "Liverpool" in the 2004-2005 season, was appointed the coach of Al-Ittihad, coming from "Aston Villa."
